Newcastle United working on deal to sign Kim Min-jae, £40 million price tag revealed

Newcastle United are pushing to sign Bayern Munich defensive mainstay Kim Min-jae, who could cost £40 million.

According to a report from Football Insider, Newcastle United are keen on reinforcing their backline ahead of next season and they have their eyes set on Kim Min-jae. The Bayern Munich superstar could be on the move this summer and the Magpies will look to make the most out of the opportunity.

Kim made a name for himself at Fenerbahce before joining Napoli in the summer of 2022. In his only season in Italy, he was named Serie A Defender of the Year, playing a key role in helping the Naples-based club win their first league title in over three decades.

He then made the move to German giants Bayern Munich in 2023 and has only gone from strength to strength since. He has featured in a total of 43 matches this season and has racked up over 3,500 minutes. While he remains a key part of Vincent Kompany’s plans, his future has been up in the air.

Reports suggest the 28-year-old could push for a move away from Bayern, and if he does, the German club are unlikely to stand in his way, although they would be reluctant to lose one of the best defenders in Europe.

Newcastle could step up their interest in Kim

Newcastle have emerged as a potential destination for the South Korean centre-back. The Magpies are third in the Premier League and they are set to secure a Champions League football. If they do make a return to the European competition, Eddie Howe will be keen on adding more quality to their squad.

The English manager will certainly look for more quality at the back as Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are both in the final phase of their career. With Sven Botman also struggling to stay fit, someone like Kim could prove to be a sensational signing for them.

While the Magpies prefer signing a young defender and have their eyes set on Dean Huijsen, they are well aware that a potential transfer for the Bournemouth centre-back could cost a fortune. As a result, they could go hard for Kim, who may prove to be a cheaper alternative and would certainly add valuable experience to their ranks.

He could make an instant impact at the Tyneside club, and his mentality could be crucial in big games, both in the league and in Europe. While any deal for the South Korean centre-back will depend on Bayern’s willingness to sell, the report suggests he could be available for around £40 million.
