Chelsea, Newcastle United make move for Gregor Kobel

Chelsea and Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing 27-year-old Swiss international Gregor Kobel from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund this summer.

According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Gregor Kobel has garnered a market in the Premier League heading into the summer transfer window. Chelsea and Newcastle United are keen on signing the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, with the two English bigwigs contacting the Swiss international’s entourage over a possible move in the coming months.

Gregor Kobel and his Borussia Dortmund journey so far

Gregor Kobel has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga since joining Borussia Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart in July 2021. The Zurich-born stopper already had experience in the German top flight before moving to Signal Iduna Park but has taken his career to new heights in the last four years.

The 27-year-old has turned out over 150 times thus far for Borussia Dortmund while keeping 50 clean sheets and conceding 208 goals. In addition, Kobel has grown in stature in international football, making 11 appearances for Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Kobel’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the Swiss international, with Chelsea and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

From Bundesliga to the Premier League soon?

Gregor Kobel has been on Chelsea’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, considering Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have blown hot and cold between the sticks. While Mike Penders and Gabriel Slonina are promising goalkeepers, Chelsea will likely dip into the market for a shot-stopper in the summer transfer window. So, Kobel has emerged as a viable target for Chelsea.

As for Newcastle United, Nick Pope has struggled with fitness issues in the last few seasons. In addition, Martin Dubravka is in the twilight of his career. So, the Magpies need a new goalkeeper and have set their sights on several candidates, including Yahia Fofana. However, Kobel is also an option worth considering for Newcastle United.

Chelsea and Newcastle United have contacted the Swiss goalkeeper’s entourage over a possible move in the summer transfer window. So, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the 27-year-old Borussia Dortmund mainstay if the two Premier League clubs contact the Bundesliga outfit.
