According to a report by Caught Offside, Goncalo Inacio is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the Sporting CP defender. They are ready to initiate discussions to land the 23-year-old, with Liverpool and Manchester City also keen on signing him.
Goncalo Inacio has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the world since breaking into the first-team squad at Sporting CP. A native of Almada, the youngster began his youth career in his homeland before joining Sporting in 2012. He progressed through the ranks at the Primeira Liga club and broke into the first-team squad in October 2020.
The 23-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough at Sporting CP under Ruben Amorim, and he came leaps and bounds under his compatriot. Inacio has turned out over 200 times thus far for Sporting CP while chipping in with 20 goals and 12 assists.
Inacio’s progress at Sporting CP has helped him secure regular game time with Portugal, making 14 appearances thus far for his national side. Meanwhile, the highly-rated defender’s stock in the market is high, with Manchester United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window. Liverpool and Manchester City are also keen on signing him.
Manchester United’s interest in Goncalo Inacio is somewhat perplexing yet understandable. The Red Devils will lose Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof in the summer transfer window. In addition, Harry Maguire is on the wrong side of 30. So, Manchester United can do with a centre-back if Maguire departs from Old Trafford in the summer transfer window. They are ready to open talks to sign Inacio.
As for Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk is on the cusp of signing a new contract with the Merseyside club. However, Joe Gomez has struggled with fitness issues during his spell with Liverpool, while van Dijk is approaching the twilight of his career. Meanwhile, Manchester City might not need a new centre-back after signing Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in the winter transfer window.
Nevertheless, Inacio is a target for Manchester City, with the Citizens competing with Liverpool and Manchester United for his signature. With the Red Devils ready to open talks over a deal, it will be interesting to see if they can beat the competition to the 23-year-old Portuguese international.
