According to a report from Football Insider, Ruben Amorim has made a U-turn regarding Casemiro’s position in his squad. The Brazilian was not an important part of his plans initially, but the former Real Madrid star has worked his way into contention.
While speaking about the 33-year-old defensive midfielder prior to the game against Bournemouth, Amorim said: “Casemiro is the best example. He wasn’t playing and then you see the last games he’s having a part, he’s performing quite well, he’s playing all the time, I like to change my mind, if they change my mind I like that, I want to put the best players in my team.”
United paid an initial £60 million plus £10 million in add-ons to sign the Brazilian international from Real Madrid back in the summer of 2022. While he had an exceptional debut campaign, things haven’t been that great for him in recent years.
The arrival of Ruben Amorim further complicated things for the 33-year-old. Initially, he wasn’t an important part of the Portuguese manager’s plans and spent a significant amount of time on the sidelines. But of late, he has been one of the go-to men for the former Sporting boss.
Casemiro seems to be back to his best and he has been putting in some impressive performances on a consistent basis. The former Real Madrid star is certain to have a major influence on their pursuit of the Europa League title.
While he could help them secure Champions League football for next season despite a disappointing league campaign, his future has been up in the air. He still has over a year left on his deal at the club and given his recent performances, Amorim would love to have him around.
But that’s unlikely to happen as he seems set for a move away from the club despite Amorim changing his mind on the veteran midfielder. Casemiro is one of the highest-paid players in their squad, and amid interest from the Middle East, United could have a major opportunity to recoup part of their investment in him while also freeing up significant space on their wage bill for potential summer signings.
While his departure could help their cause, United will only let him leave if a decent offer arrives. But if he does end up staying for another season, Amorim will certainly look to make the most of the experience he brings.
