According to a report from Football Insider, Newcastle United could knock on the doors of Angers SCO this summer to sign their goalkeeper, Yahia Fofana. The Magpies have been keeping a close eye on him and are considering making a move, but they might have to battle rivals Wolves and Brentford, who are also interested in his signature.
After coming up the ranks at Le Havre and making a name for himself while playing for their first team, Fofana made the move to Angers in the summer of 2022. He has only gone from strength to strength since and has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in the world.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper switched his international allegiance from France to the Ivory Coast and played a key role in their 2024 Africa Cup of Nations triumph. He has continued his sensational form this season and currently boasts the best post-shot expected goals (PSxG) record across Europe’s top five leagues.
His performances have attracted a lot of interest, and three Premier Leagues recently scouted him ahead of a potential transfer. Newcastle, Wolves and Brentford, who are all keen on signing him, had sent their scouts to keep an eye on the Ivorian international.
They were present in the stands at the Parc des Princes to watch his team go up against giants PSG. While they suffered a 1-0 defeat, Fofana did put in an impressive performance. Since he is all set to enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer, it could be a great opportunity for all three English clubs to try and sign him.
The report suggests he could be available for around £15 million this summer, which certainly seems to be a bargain, given his massive potential.
Brentford would love to add him to their squad as they seek more competition for a place in their starting XI. They are not entirely convinced by Mark Flekken’s performances and would love to have a young shot-stopper who can put some pressure on him.
With Jose Sa struggling, Wolves are also considering investing in a young keeper for the long run. They certainly admire Fofana and could make a move for him. Both clubs will face significant competition from Newcastle, who are looking at the Ivorian goalkeeper as their future number one.
Martin Dubravka is 36, and Nick Pope will be 33 in just over a week, as a result, Eddie Howe is looking for someone who can replace them in the long run. They have been investing in young players for a while now and see this as a great opportunity to add more quality to their team.
