Aston Villa ready to step up interest in Kevin De Bruyne

The decision-makers at Aston Villa are reportedly ready to back Unai Emery’s interest in Kevin De Bruyne by pursuing the long-serving Manchester City playmaker this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, Kevin De Bruyne is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. Unai Emery wants the West Midlands club to sign the Manchester City veteran in the summer transfer window. The Villans are ready to back their manager by pursuing a Bosman move for the Belgian international.

Kevin De Bruyne and his legendary Manchester City stint

Kevin De Bruyne has been one of the best players in the world since joining Manchester City from VfL Wolfsburg in August 2015. The veteran playmaker has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for most of his spell with the Citizens, playing his part in their dominance across all competitions in the past decade.

However, the 33-year-old has struggled with fitness issues in the last few seasons, and those issues have compounded and affected his game time. De Bruyne has managed only 2,053 minutes of game time across 35 appearances in all competitions this season. However, the player’s productivity has not suffered.

The Belgian international has contributed to 13 goals, finding the back of the net five times and providing eight assists. However, De Bruyne’s illustrious stint with Manchester City will end after the curtains fall on the 2024/25 season, as he will depart from the Etihad as a free agent.

What next?

Kevin De Bruyne’s stock in the market remains high, even though most of the interest has stemmed from MLS and the Saudi Pro League. However, Aston Villa will aim to beat the competition to the Manchester City veteran’s signature in the summer transfer window, with Unai Emery keen on securing his services.

Aston Villa’s interest in the veteran playmaker is understandable. While Morgan Rogers has been exceptional for the West Midlands outfit, Unai Emery wants more firepower in his squad to scale new heights. So, De Bruyne has emerged as a viable target for Aston Villa, with the Premier League outfit’s decision-makers ready to back Emery’s interest.

While widespread reports have suggested that a move to MLS might be on the cards for the 33-year-old Belgian international, the opportunity to remain in the Premier League might appeal to him. So, it will be interesting to see if Aston Villa can beat the competition to land the Manchester City veteran in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.
