Tottenham ponder triggering Thomas Frank release clause

Tottenham are now pondering a move for Thomas Frank to replace Ange Postecoglou, and they are willing to trigger the Brentford manager’s release clause.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham are open to landing Thomas Frank as Ange Postecoglou’s replacement in the summer by triggering his release clause. Brentford will be left powerless should Spurs take that route, as the North Londoners view him as an upgrade to the beleaguered Australian tactician.

Tottenham are set for a decisive summer transfer window with some fundamental changes expected to take place at the club starting with a change of manager. Ange Postecoglou may have secured a stay on his sacking with a narrow win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League to reach the semi-finals of the competition.

Tottenham have already developed doubts about the Australian’s long-term future at the club, and he might still get the sack even if Spurs end up winning the Europa League. The North Londoners are already considering a host of names to replace Postecoglou, with Thomas Frank seen as one of the ideal candidates for the role.

Andoni Iraola might have been their priority choice, although the Spaniard is expected to reject Tottenham and stay at Bournemouth. The south coast club are already in talks with him over a new deal, which could push Spurs to look at other alternatives.

Thomas Frank was a target even back in January when they seriously considered sacking Postecoglou. Earlier in that period they were unwilling to trigger the Brentford manager’s release clause, although they are now open to the prospect of paying what is necessary to bring the 51-year-old manager as a replacement for the Australian.

Is Thomas Frank an upgrade over Ange Postecoglou?

As things stand, Brentford under the leadership of Frank, are expected to finish above Tottenham in the table. The 51-year-old manager has shown enough to convince some of the big Premier League clubs to take notice of his style; Tottenham are mulling over triggering his release clause.

They probably view Thomas Frank as an immediate upgrade over Postecoglou to take this Tottenham side to the next level. While Spurs are open to appointing him, the final decision might rest with Frank himself, as he could evaluate his future and decide whether or not he wants to make the move across London to Spurs.
