Cristian Romero fuels speculation surrounding Tottenham future

Cristian Romero’s comments about his desire to play in La Liga have fueled fresh speculation regarding his future at Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer.

Tottenham have had a season to forget on all fronts barring the Europa League. The north Londoners could still call this campaign a success of sorts and make it one of the most memorable in over two decades if they end up winning the second-tier European competition, which does allow them entry into next season’s Champions League.

They still have to manoeuvre the challenge of Bodo/Glimt in the semifinals, as they are the favourites to have a place in the Final. However, there are some big decisions on the club’s table ahead of the summer, as there are rumours of a lot of players wanting to leave.

One specific area is central defence, as both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are reportedly considering exits. The former in particular has been in the news regarding his future, as some reports have stated the Argentine was ready to assess his options ahead of the summer.

In an interview, he stated his desire to play in La Liga as relayed by TN via Sport Witness. The defender states he’s focused on ending the season with Tottenham and winning the Europa League, but remained uncertain about his immediate future in the summer.

Romero said, “I try to take it one day at a time. There are two months left until the end of the season, and my focus is always on performing at my best and finishing in the best possible way.”

“We’re in the Europa League semi-finals; it’s an important step for the club, after so many years of waiting to reach this stage. I’d like to win it.”

“After this, we’ll see. I haven’t spoken to my agent yet, but I’m willing to do anything. My focus is on growing, but I don’t want to talk about that. I’d love to play in the Spanish league. I’d love to compete in all the top leagues.”

There’s big interest from Atletico Madrid who are eager to sign him before the Club World Cup in the summer. The idea of playing under compatriot Diego Simeone alongside many of his Argentine teammates will be a tempting prospect for the Tottenham mainstay.

Apart from Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid are also interested in Romero, as Florentino Perez wants a new centre-back in his ranks during the close season. There are some other names on their list, but should the Argentine be made available at the right price, Real Madrid will be there in the mix.

Romero is seemingly ready to leave Tottenham as his comments have fueled further speculation regarding his immediate future at the club. For now, he must focus on matters in the Europa League and give himself every chance to leave the club as a key figure who won a major trophy, as transfer speculation could wait until after the Europa League.
