According to Christian Falk via CaughtOffside, Chelsea are clear favourites to win the race for the signature of Jamie Gittens. Borussia Dortmund are ready to negotiate the departure of the young winger, who dreams of making a return to the Premier League.
Gittens was a part of the Manchester City youth ranks before he made the move to Dortmund in the summer of 2020. He went up the ranks at some pace and got promoted to their first team in 2022.
The 20-year-old winger has since gone from strength to strength and has established himself as an important first-team player. He has featured in a total of 44 matches in the ongoing campaign and has contributed towards 17 goals.
While he prefers playing on the left flank, he can pretty much feature anywhere in attack. He still has three years left on his contract at the club but his future looks uncertain. The English youth international is not an important part of Niko Kovac’s plans and Dortmund seem willing to cash in on him.
The German club where earlier looking for a fee close to €100 million but they have lowered the price tag to just €50 million, which does play in the hands of Chelsea, who are interested in his services.
While speaking to CaughtOffside, Falk said: “Jamie Gittens: Chelsea have the best chance of prevailing in this particular piece of transfer poker.
“The question is: how much money is the club prepared to pay? Dortmund have already lowered their price tag: from €100 to 50million. This is because the player does not fit into coach Niko Kovac’s system.
“That’s why the player himself would also be very much in favour of a move. Gittens’ dream is a transfer to the Premier League.”
The London club are constantly on the lookout for young players with massive potential and Gittens certainly seems to be an ideal fit for their project. He will add a lot of firepower to their attack and his versatility could come in handy for Enzo Maresca’s team.
With Jadon Sancho likely to return to his parent club and Mykhaylo Mudryk banned, the Blues do need more quality on the flanks for next season and the Dortmund winger could help their cause. Since he is set to be available for just €50 million, the London club can certainly afford to sign him.
Falk believes Chelsea have the best chance of signing him. But they could face competition from Liverpool, who have also been linked with him for a while now. The Reds could make significant changes to their attack in the summer. Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez could end up leaving the club and Gittens could be a great signing for the long run.
With the Dortmund forward eager to return to the Premier League, the race for his signature promises to be intriguing, although Falk believes Chelsea are currently in pole position.
