Liverpool picked up their 20th league title win this past weekend, and they have already won the UEFA Champions League six times in the past. Manchester United were ahead of their rivals when it came to winning league titles, but Liverpool have now equalled that tally. With the Reds leading in the Champions League now, they are clearly the biggest club in England, according to Neville.
“It is a massive deal,” before adding, “When you think of the importance of a league title and the great managers Liverpool have had: Shankley, Paisley, Kenny Dalglish, Joe Fagan. And then obviously at United as well, talking about the importance of your bread and butter being the league title.
“The accolade of the most successful club, you could debate it maybe when United were on 20 titles because obviously Liverpool have more European Cups. But once Liverpool get level, the painful thing to say is that unfortunately the debate is over for a period until Manchester United become successful again and win leagues.
Gary Nevill continued, “It should cause real tremors over at Old Trafford. The idea that Liverpool – which is obviously a great football club – will be the most successful club in English football after today, that really should cause heartache and pain, because it took a lot to get ahead of Liverpool. They were miles ahead when Alex Ferguson took over.”
Manchester United have been going through a period of struggle for quite some time. They have not been able to win a major trophy in recent years, and Liverpool’s success will be a huge disappointment for them. It will be interesting to see if they can rebuild the squad during the summer transfer window and bounce back strongly. But Gary Neville’s words should ring true for his former club.
A club of their stature should be fighting for league titles regularly. Manchester United have spent substantial amounts of money, but they have not been able to bring in quality players who can help them win trophies. Manchester United are in the mid-table positions right now, and it will be interesting to see if they can finish the season strongly.
The Red Devils have made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League, and winning the tournament would be a huge boost for them. It will lift the morale around the club and will also allow Manchester United to compete in the Champions League next year. As for Liverpool, they also have key areas that they need to improve this summer, and Arne Slot will hope to see his squad getting desired reinforcement in the coming months.
