Wahbi Khazri held back from fighting with Montpellier fans following weight chants

Montpellier HSC haven’t shown much fight on the pitch this season, however, there was almost a fight in the stands at the Mosson on Sunday.

Montpellier’s relegation to Ligue 2 was confirmed even before the match against Stade de Reims on Sunday. Le Havre’s draw against AS Monaco ensures that MHSC will finish rock bottom of the league. The season has been marked by financial issues, disunity and finger-pointing. The club’s experienced players have been the target of criticism from the fans. Téji Savanier and Wahbi Khazri have borne the brunt of that.

Both players were booed when they came off the bench on Sunday as La Paillade held Reims to a goalless draw, ending their 11-game losing run and keeping their first clean sheet of the season.

However, as per L’Équipe, there was a confrontation post-match as the Montpellier fans chanted: “A calzone for Khazri, a snack for Téji.” The chants were a reference to both players’ weight, with the pair accused of being overweight this season. Khazri took particular exception to the chants and almost got into a fight with his own fans before being held back.

Khazri will leave Montpellier at the end of the season, with his contract at the club expiring. Many of the other experienced players, including Savanier, are expected to follow.
